Four Nod app screens: points, send cash and rewards

The problem

The client wanted a tipping app for Australian hospitality, convinced there was a gap in the market.

How I solved it

  1. 01Set up research to test whether people actually wanted a tipping app.
  2. 02Ran generative research with 5 self-identified regular tippers.
  3. 03Found little appetite, and steered the client beyond money-only tips.
  4. 04Designed an MVP with cash tips plus points workers can redeem for rewards like extra leave, or bring to promotion conversations.

Outcome

The client kept the app but broadened it, so it could still help service workers in a country that doesn’t tip much.

What I learned

The idea kept me motivated because it helped service workers. Given Australia’s appetite for tipping, it would likely do even better in the US.
