The problem
Trust deed reviews were slow, repetitive work for NAB’s paralegals. The bank wanted to speed them up with AI without disrupting how paralegals already worked.
How I solved it
- 01Designed a first pass, then ran a workshop with 5 paralegals to validate the content and journey.
- 02Interviewed 6 paralegals on the updated design to settle a stakeholder dispute: how much clause detail should the tool show?
- 03Found paralegals always want to check some clauses themselves, like Universal Powers. So instead of a costly, fully transparent build, each clause is flagged Passed, Missing or Review needed.
- 04Ran regular playbacks with the GenAI team to keep design and research aligned.
Outcome
Approved for a pilot with 10 paralegals and the foundation for the scaled build. Average review time dropped from 45 minutes to 5, and the work was covered in the AFR .
Inside the work
-
Trust deeds are uploaded to a separate internal platform
-
Trust deeds appear on the dashboard front end
-
Paralegals search the trust deed and associated documents in the tool
-
Tool flags execution errors or missing clauses
-
Paralegal makes the next decision based on what’s been flagged
What I learned
Paralegals trusted AI most when they could still check the detail. Their own words from interviews settled disagreements between sponsors and executives.
